I love creating mandalas, and the fearsome scorpion has morphed into a tattoo-inspired mandala pattern.

“Mutant Gasmask” was created for the Winter Wasteland Art Show at Syzygy Coop. The tentacles and blobby hand were subtle indications that this creature is not entirely human. This piece is a bit of cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic and futuristic themes rolled into one. I wanted to make this piece a bit more bleak and gritty, but not necessarily fully dystopian or pretty like the sleek synthwave/retrowave imagery. This mutant is caught in an urban wilderness at the start of a snowstorm. The artwork was originally created in pen/pencil, then scanned and digital coloring and backgrounds were placed during processing.

“Cordyceps Rat” was created for the Winter Wasteland Art Show at Syzygy Coop, Feb. 6, 2020. While Cordyceps seems to target insects and invertebrae mainly, I wondered what it would be like if the deathly fungus infected animals, particularly rodents (as this is the Zodiac Year of the Rat). With the theme of Wasteland, my rat has become a mutant, with eyes of the cuttlefish and worm-like toes. Its appearance encompasses a bit of zombie and undead features, with exposed bones and flesh. The artwork was created in pen/pencil, first, then added abstract textures and digital coloring.

This creepy holiday drawing is inspired by the strange and wonderful Welsh tradition of adorning horse skulls with ribbons and visiting merry spots, singing requests for entry.

This piece was created for the “Resolution” Art Show curated by Wonderland SF Gallery’s Irene Hernandez-Feiks, for Palette Gallery, in collaboration with 111 Minna. With a show at the end of the year, and a concept of Resolution, I wanted to explore the ideas of contemplation, purpose and determination. Lotus flowers are long associated with meditation and love. The florals combined with the beautiful praying mantis create a atmosphere of wonder and beauty, a place of stillness and resolve.
The art show rendition includes a real Dead Leaf Praying Mantis, painted and adorned, making it a delicate one-of-a-kind creation.

This Succulent Plant Skull piece will be shown at the 100 Under $100 Art Show at the fantastic Fleetwood Gallery on December 5th (2 shows in one night– the Loin’s Cat Art Show and this one–right across the street from each other, for First Thursday’s Art Walk, yay!)
