Donnie Darko Frank the Bunny Rabbit

Donnie Darko is a fascinating cult film with intriguing characters and a unique tale of fantasy and horror. This is my rendition of “Frank the Bunny” with a quote from the movie “You are the Product of Fear”. Behind the rabbit, is scrawled the numbers “28064212”, an ominous number in the film that indicates “the day the earth will end”.

Egyptian Art Series by Sherrie Thai of Shaireproductions

I really enjoyed creating this Egyptian Series, exploring the mighty Pharaoh Queen Hatshepsut and the gods of Egypt, Anubis and Horus. These pieces were created via pen/ink and digital coloring, while incorporating my photography into the background. It’s now AVAILABLE AS A PRINT HERE at my Etsy Shop.

Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut T Shirts
EGYPTIAN QUEEN TSHIRT

Queen Hatshepsut is regarded as one of the most successful pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Aside from being one of the first solo female rulers of the Old World, she established trade while keeping peace between regions. I wanted to create an elegant and powerful queen, with a nod to the mysticism of magic and mythology of her time period. Atop her head is the rising sun and cow’s horns, which were elements of beauty and fertility, associated with the goddesses Hathor and Isis. Cobras were protectors to the ancient Egyptians, so I added a couple of extra ones 🙂 Towards the bottom of the piece is a subtly placed photograph of Hatshepsut’s Temple, taken while I was in the Valley of the Kings.

Anubis and Horus are presented with an architectural facade with a scarab beetle at the top, a symbol of renewal in the Ancient World. The coloring of the background is kept monochromatic, while the inner circle resembles the tones of a rising sun, a continuous theme throughout traditional Egyptian art. My goal with these pieces were to keep with the traditional aspect of Ancient Egyptian papyrus paintings, but with a variant in composition and a bit more realistic shading.

“Gingerbread Zombie” is a deliciously fun homage to B-movie creature features. Wanted to take a little break from the dark gothic art and explore the lighter side of Black Christmas. It was created in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, while watching the amazing “Walking Dead” series on Netflix.

“Skeletons Playing Piano Duet” is an informal homage to my favorite instrument with a fun “day of the dead”-inspired scene. This piece was also inspired by Tim Burton’s “Corpse Bride”–I adore the piano scene in the movie where the characters tickled the ivory keys and started an infactuation. My illustration was created via pen/pencil with an incorporation of old photo textures and digital coloring. I always like to retain the original black & white drawing in its original state for greater flexibility 🙂

Happy Halloween! “Skull Goddess” is an exploration into the lighter side of the macabre. It’s inspired by my recent trip to Southeast Asia, primarily Bayon of Angkor Wat, Cambodia, and the White Temple of Thailand, which depicts modern scenarios of good vs. evil. I created this via the usual pen/ink and graphite media, with a smidget of digital coloring. The pigments are kept to a minimum to highlight the details, but to also echo the stone carvings of the ancient temples.

This piece is available as an 8.5″ x 11″ art print HERE ON ETSY

Artwork: Horror Moth

Horror Moth tshirt design on zazzle, art by Sherrie Thai of Shaireproductions

“Horror Moth” is a skeletal rendering of the metamorphic creature. It seems in Western cultures, the moth represents horror, with the qualities of fragility and death, while in Japanese folklore, such as “The Dream of Akinosuke”, it represents a departure of souls. This is available as a t-shirt and entirely customizable. Check it out HERE

I’ve always admired the ferocious horns of the Dynastinae or Rhinoceros Beetles, so I combined them with a human rib cage, eyeball and beautiful wings. It’s enjoyable exploring sinister creatures and insects. The first was “Deathly Scarab”–perhaps a whole series to come! 🙂 The piece was created with pen/ink and Photoshop coloring.
