Happy Halloween! “Skull Goddess” is an exploration into the lighter side of the macabre. It’s inspired by my recent trip to Southeast Asia, primarily Bayon of Angkor Wat, Cambodia, and the White Temple of Thailand, which depicts modern scenarios of good vs. evil. I created this via the usual pen/ink and graphite media, with a smidget of digital coloring. The pigments are kept to a minimum to highlight the details, but to also echo the stone carvings of the ancient temples.

“Horror Moth” is a skeletal rendering of the metamorphic creature. It seems in Western cultures, the moth represents horror, with the qualities of fragility and death, while in Japanese folklore, such as “The Dream of Akinosuke”, it represents a departure of souls. I’ve always admired the ferocious horns of the Dynastinae or Rhinoceros Beetles, so I combined them with a human rib cage, eyeball and beautiful wings. It’s enjoyable exploring sinister creatures and insects. The first was “Deathly Scarab”–perhaps a whole series to come! 🙂 The piece was created with pen/ink and Photoshop coloring.

Nebulus Skull Art

After rewatching Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” and the St. Patrick’s Day parade, I was inspired to create “Nebulus Skull”. There are many different elements here–a skull designed with celtic and tribal patterns in an astrological environment, surrounded by a halo of leaves.

Of course, this is no ordinary skull. Its origin comes from the ancient stories of Gaia and H.P Lovecraft’s “Old Ones”, monstrous dieties dwelling in different realms of the universe. “Nebulus Skull” may look evil, but looks can be deceiving–it is in fact a benevolent creator of life.

“Skeletal Heart” is about love and death amidst the quiet beauty of nature. The colors are muted to highlight the subject matter and details of the illustration. Like many of my recent works, I’m greatly influenced by Victorian elements, steampunk, gothic surrealism, and nature.

“The Fates” (or Moirai) is based on the mythical goddesses that rule the thread of life: Spinner, Allotter and Unturnable. My version portraits a darker view of the Fates, where the Spinner produces the magical thread from the depths of her soul.

“Momento Mori” is Latin for “Remember Death”, which speaks of the transient nature of objects and one’s mortality. I wanted to create a world which celebrates positivity and beauty in all forms, where memories of love exists beyond the confines of time. Here are some concept sketches for “Momento Mori”. I wanted to infuse some steampunk elements, but after the rough sketch, decided to add some roses to soften up the image. I’m pretty pleased with how this piece came out as it exhibits an emotional narrative.

Inspired by dark fantasy and watching too many episodes of American Horror Story and NBC’s Hannibal, “Excelsius Trio” crawled into my mind. Its ethereal quality captures the mysterious beauty and potential darkness of the supernatural. This Illustration was created with pen, graphite and digital coloring.
