Fortune Cookie, Made in USA. It’s fascinating that this delicious snack was created in SF by Hagiwara (designer of the Japanese Tea Garden), inspired by the Shinto temple treats overseas. With the invention of the fortune cookie folding machine in Oakland by Asian-American and Berkeley grad, Shuck Yee, in 1973, this yummy treat was mass-marketed and now celebrated globally. Though it has been associated with Asian cultures, it’s purely an Asian-American invention, just like the interesting lamp decor of SF Chinatown.

I’ve been fascinated by the nightclubs/lounges of San Francisco Chinatown from the 1930s to 1950s, featuring Chinese American caberet performers, entertainers and burlesque shows. Jadin Wong was one of the featured dancers who eventually went to Hollywood, became a comedian and created her own casting company, battling stereotypes along the way. This portrait was based on a NSFW beautiful portrait, but I wanted to make her a little more family-friendly, though modernizing her with a fun dragon tattoo and an elaborate floral headdress, of roses, rather than traditional peonies.
