The “Revenge of Madame Butterfly” Art print is now available on ETSY~snatch it up! 🙂
Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” is widely known as a beautiful classic opera, and although I can appreciate the aesthetics and musicality of the creation, I loathe the story. The protagonist is portrayed as a weak woman who unfortunately fell in love with a coward, who uses her and takes away her child, leaving her to commit suicide as an escape from her broken heart.
“Revenge of Madame Butterfly” is my dark continuation of the story–the protagonist gains strength in the afterlife and exacts her revenge on all who had wronged her, mainly her unfortunate lover. What she lacked in life was gained in her passage to the underworld. I combined the “Day of the Dead” makeup with the geisha outfit to emphasize the narrative spirit of the piece. The colors on the face are kept minimal to denote the ghostly presence. I also took some creative licensing with the sword design–more daunting and menacing than the typical samurai sword. Why do guys get to have all the fun?
