Krasue and the Churel, explorations into Asian horror creatures. The Krasue (in Thai, known by many names across different Southeast Asian countries: Ahp in Cambodia, Kasu in Laos, Penanggalan in Malay, Manananggal in the Philippines) is a half human/ half nocturnal demon that inhabits a cursed woman through contaminated food or water. At night, the head detaches from the body, with internal organs in tow, and flies through the sky in search of fresh blood, mainly beasts, children and pregnant women.
The Churel is Persian in origin, popularized in India and Pakistan (with appearances in other Southeast Asian cultures) and is a vampiric witch entity. In its true form, it is a hideous creature of the forest with wirey unkept hair, claw hands, large lips, pig nose, tusk teeth and a long tongue, who enacts revenge against those who’ve wronged her in life, or in childbirth. Since the Churel is from the forest, I decided to give her toad-like features–as the animals are associated with witches in European folklore–mixing cultures 🙂

“Swarm” beetle illustration on a wooden figure is inspired by the slow-burn psychological film of the same name, about a bevy of locusts snacking on the locals, with an occasional closeup scene of insect legs lodged in the skin, fun times.

The Painted Bat of Asia is the quintessential Halloween Bat with its orange and black markings. I coupled this fun creature with marigold flowers, fragrant florals used in Day of the Dead (to attract the souls) and also in Diwali celebrations (auspicious for new beginnings).
