While viewing Ukraine’s heart-wrenching situation, I came across the myth of the Pysanky (decorated eggs, symbolic of luck throughout the year). The Hutsuls people of Western Ukraine believed that the world’s fate depended upon the pysanka. A horrid monster, Pekun, representing evil, was chained to a cliff and the more pysanky that was created through good will, the stronger the chains became against the beast, with good ultimately triumphing over evil. This piece is a tribute to the strength of the spirit, with symbols of love and hope throughout–and the impending spring and emergence from the darkness. The center of the design is the symbolic 8-point star, representing the sun god, Dazhboh, a symbol of protection, and the spirals are a ward against evil. Sending lots of love and light.
