I have always been fascinated by New Orleans and had to travel there for Halloween, to experience the wonderful revelry and explore the dark crevices of the French Quarter and beyond. The people, food, art and stories were inspiring as there is so much soul and energy out there–definitely going back!
“Waking Dream” is inspired by horror films, zombies and magic. The core of the design is a rendered skull of rocks, with the spirits seeping through below. It was mostly created via several pens and a touch of graphite. I added a tint of green and yellow for the eyes–subtle coloring via Photoshop.
On their own, skeletons naturally have a great mystery to them, where they can sway towards the dark or light, depending upon the context. “Burning Lotus” shows a meditative creature with magical candles, inspired by traditional Asian art. While this piece has qualities of religious artifacts, the intention is not to offend, but rather, honor the spiritual connection to supernatural elements.
I put together this flyer design (with my “Steampunk Skull” art) for the upcoming “Darkness & Noir” Art Show, which will be happening at Allied Ink Tattoos & Piercing Shop/Gallery in Vallejo. Opening reception will be at Oct. 18th, just in time for All Hallowed Eve! Will post my entry into the show in the coming weeks. . .
Halloween is believed to be a day when the veil between the living and dead is lifted, where magical beings can wander the world in freedom. This mixed media illustration was inspired by the three witches of Macbeth and the magical oracles of ancient civilizations.
